One of the most exciting large‐scale, multiplayer gaming events is coming to Sacramento on Saturday, April 16. West Coast MegaGames (WCM) is hosting its third megagame at Great Escape Games near Howe and Hurley. The megagame Watch the Skies asks players to decide how humanity will react and respond to an alien invasion. Individual tickets for this all day event range from $45 to $60 per player, and team tickets are also available for $130 to $270. Tickets for this event can be purchased at westcoastmegagames.com.
When Aliens Invade, Humans Unite or Fight: How Megagames Can Be For Everyone
A megagame is a board game simulation event that takes place in real time. As many as 100 players will gather in one location to take part in a multi‐layered, social strategy game where they work to resolve their objectives over the course of the day, while responding to unexpected challenges as they arise. Because of their unique interactive game play, unpredictable situations and role playing elements, megagames are quickly becoming a true phenomenon within the gaming community.
Originally created by Megagame Makers, Watch the Skies takes place during an alien invasion of Earth in 2020 and creates an arena where players can embrace their imaginations and ask themselves “what would I do if I was in a leadership position and aliens were invading?”
Game play is centered around political intrigue, military activity, scientific research and journalistic integrity during this fantastical premise. Players are divided into teams of 2 to 7 (who may or may not know one another before the start of the game). Teams represent nations, scientists, journalists documenting the alien invasion and the alien races themselves. In addition, nations have representatives serving on a mock United Nations security team with the objective of managing international communications and conflicts.
WCM’s version of Watch the Skies modifies the original to make game play easier for beginners and features new dynamic tech components. Players will also have new resources they can use as they decide how to respond to the alien invasion and a series of unexpected situations throughout the course of the game.
Watch the Skies marks WCM’s third megagame in the Sacramento area. Each event has had nearly 60 participants, with some traveling from as far as Los Angeles, Portland, Ore., and England to join the fun. Whether you’re familiar with tabletop and roleplaying games or not, this unique gaming experience is open to everyone, easy to learn and guaranteed to be memorable.
Originally founded as Sacramento MegaGames, WCM is a volunteer collective that develops, produces and hosts megagame events with the goals of introducing more people to these unique gaming experiences that are fun for everyone and growing the gaming community throughout the West Coast.
WCM was inspired by the work of Megagame Makers, who have spent the last three decades designing games that merge strategy, negotiation, imagination and humor around any topic – ranging from a sci‐fi plot (such as Watch the Skies) to historical events reimagined.
WCM believes all games – megagames in particular – teach players invaluable social skills including creative problem solving through collaboration, how to communicate with diverse audiences, and critical thinking. Learn more and read FAQs at westcoastmegagames.com.
